Periodontal Care in Brampton (Gums)

Periodontal (gum) disease affects many adults in Canada.

Your oral health care habits have a large impact on your risk for gum disease. Plaque is constantly being formed on the teeth due to bacteria, which can progress with a lack of brushing or flossing regularly. When plaque is not regularly eliminated at home, it can produce tartar that can only be effectively removed by a professional dentist or hygienist.

Gingivitis

The longer tartar is left on teeth, the more harmful it becomes. Gingivitis is the gingiva (gums) that become infected due to tartar buildup in the mouth. A tell-tale sign of gingivitis is gums that bleed with brushing or flossing. Thankfully, gingivitis can be reversed as soon as the patient begins taking better care of their gums by brushing twice a day and flossing once. They may require a deep clean with a dental professional if they haven’t had a cleaning in over six months.

Advanced gum disease

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to serious inflammation around the tooth. When this occurs, the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces or pockets that become infected. As the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line, the body's immune system starts to fight back.

Gum Disease

Gum disease can progress from simple gum inflammation to a serious disease, causing significant damage to the soft tissue and bone.
